Forty one members of the Lewis County Republican Party attended the 2010 Republican convention at the Vancouver Hilton. The excitement was high and keynote speakers were received standing ovations. On Thursday and Friday before the convention, there were classes and time to meet fellow republicans from other areas of the state, along with many of this year's candidates for office.
The keynote speaker for the sold-out banquet on Friday evening was Michelle Malkin who was at her best as she spoke of the need to sweep Washington D.C. clean in the elections this year. She was available for a book-signing after the dinner, and she graciously posed with the lucky recipients.
During the actual convention, the delegates heard from the candidates for office along with the keynote speaker, Governor Mitt Romney. The enthusiasm and energy were felt by everyone, and all of the candidates did an excellent job outlining the work that needs to be done in both the State Legislature and the Congress. It is vital that we elect Republicans to office to stop the destruction of both our economy and our liberites.
As usual, there was a lot to be learned at a convention. Roberts Rules of Order, Republican Convention rules, platforms and platform committees, resolutions, and debate. These are all subjects that are a bit confusing, but they provide structure to our debate and they are used to create a democratic process. I have attended five conventions now, and I sometimes feel as if I am just getting started in the learning process. One thing I have learned for certain. Political process never acomplishes things as fast as I would like, and the end result is never exaclty as I would prefer. If only I were queen....wait, but then we wouldn't have this wonderful Country which was founded on rules, law, and the political process. I think our forefathers wanted change to be a somewhat slow process, otherwise, the citizens would always be in danger whenever Congress is in session!
